Chromatic Characterization of Biclique Cover
نویسندگان
چکیده
A biclique B of a simple graph G is the edge-set of a complete bipartite (not necessarily induced) subgraph of G. A biclique cover of G is a collection of bicliques covering the edgeset of G. Given a graph G, we will study the following problem: find the minimum number of bicliques which cover the edge-set of G. This problem will be called the minimum biclique cover problem (MBC). First, we will define the families of independent and dependent sets of the edge-set E of G: F ⊆ E will be called independent if there exists a biclique B ⊆ E such that F ⊆ B, and will be called dependent otherwise. From our study of minimal dependent sets we will derive a {0, 1} linear programming formulation of the following problem: find the maximum weighted biclique in a graph. This formulation may have an exponential number of constraints with respect to the number of nodes of G but we will prove that the continuous relaxation of this integer program can be solved in polynomial time. Finally we will also study continuous relaxation methods for the problem (MBC). This research was motivated by an open problem of Fishburn and Hammer. keywords: biclique, chromatic number χ, hypergraph rank, clique number ω.

متن کاملVertex Cover in Graphs with Locally Few Colors
In [13], Erdős et al. defined the local chromatic number of a graph as the minimum number of colors that must appear within distance 1 of a vertex. For any ∆ ≥ 2, there are graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic number that can be colored so that (i) no vertex neighborhood contains more than ∆ different colors (bounded local colorability), and (ii) adjacent vertices from two color classes indu...
متن کاملBounds for the b-chromatic number of some families of graphs
In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for b-chromatic number of K1,t -free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are in terms of either clique number or chromatic number of graphs or biclique number for bipartite graphs. We show that all the bounds are tight. AMS Classification: 05C15.
متن کاملBiclique-colouring verification complexity and biclique-colouring power graphs
Biclique-colouring is a colouring of the vertices of a graph in such a way that no maximal complete bipartite subgraph with at least one edge is monochromatic. We show that it is coNP-complete to check whether a given function that associates a colour to each vertex is a bicliquecolouring, a result that justifies the search for structured classes where the biclique-colouring problem could be ef...
متن کاملBiclique Coverings and the Chromatic Number
Consider a graph G with chromatic number k and a collection of complete bipartite graphs, or bicliques, that cover the edges of G. We prove the following two results: • If the bicliques partition the edges of G, then their number is at least 2 √ log2 . This is the first improvement of the easy lower bound of log2 k, while the Alon-Saks-Seymour conjecture states that this can be improved to k − ...
